There is great leadership everywhere. In education, sport, military, business and more. Leaders are responsible for setting the vision, the values and then steering the ship. They need empathy, resilience and bravery as they chart the direction of their enterprise.

KNOW YOUR GAME

As a nationally ranked junior tennis player, most of my early leadership lessons were learnt through sport. Know your own game, play to your strengths and stay focused on your goal no matter what adversity you encounter. Business, like sport, is not always easy and requires razor sharp focus to achieve long term success.

DIG DEEPER

Thought leaders such as Simon Sinek have encouraged us all to dig even deeper into why we do things. People want to work for or buy from companies who know their purpose. Like a well written song or documentary, a truthful story will resonate with us and help us form a connection. But companies rarely get it right and can be guilty of changing their values and trying to be everything to everyone.

So good leadership is about digging deeper into what you stand for. What you do is your product, why you do it is your brand.

 
 

MORE THAN YOUR CUSTOMERS

So getting clarity on why you do something will not only help you to attract customers but also employees, partners and associates who support your purpose. Once you are clear on your major purpose as a business, it is the job of the leader to steer the ship with authenticity.

So it’s not what it is but what it means.
